Anyone that made it back from the punch episode the previous night was probably still drifting. There's only an AUD for the first set, though it's not bad for a '71. The dating of the show matches the vault tape, the official release, a newspaper account, the re-stamped tix and AUD tapes from the run. After this they had a few weeks off to prepare for a one-off in France, and to workup Sugaree, Brown-Eyed Women and Mr. Charlie.
First Set. After an average start, Pig delivers an Ain't it Crazy almost as good as 4/28. It's also worth hearing the AUD for a positively pepped Pig on Next Time You See Me. And this Morning Dew - if only we had the SBD. Petition the gods. Promised Land is the second one, and still being worked out. An iffy Good Lovin' has a cut @~11:23 of maybe 20-30secs. The quality is worse here.
Second Set. The opening China Cat is still AUD-only, which overlaps the SBD Rider by 36secs. They're solid versions, the Sugar Mag less so. Cumberland would be typical of the era if Phil wasn't a behemoth driving a tank through the frame. They are now an amazingly tight unit for the next few. Like all of the best versions of Me & My Uncle, Jer is involved behind Bobby, and inventive. Check out how he finishes his solo after the next verse starts, with an exclamation point! Deal is (real) ice cream for lunch (two scoops of yr faves). Still solid, Truckin' is the oiled-machine as quartet. You might make it through this Lovelight once; it's cringeworthy today. Back to the machine, Uncle John's is neat and tidy. The finish is nice and raucous: Jer bein' goode.

SOURCES: The first set is AUD-only. Try miller_31968. It runs fast, needing pitch adjustment of -1% for Bertha>Ain't it Crazy; -1.5% for Loser; and -2% for the rest and China Cat. Because there is no SBD of the first set in the vault, the second set was chosen for the vinyl-only Winterland RSD release. The SBD runs fast, needing pitch correction of -0.75% for Rider & Sugar Mag; -1% for Cumberland>Lovelight; -1.5% for UJB; and -2% for Casey Jones & JBG. The vinyl needs about the same corrections: -1% throughout, except 0% for M&MU and -2% for Casey & JBG (Sugar Mag needs -1% on average; it wavers from needing -1.25% at the beginning to -0.75% at the end).

Twas a mighty letdown from the previous night's experience in that about half the folks from the night before showed up for numerous odd reasons. Mostly because, the night before, so many had been busted and sent to loony bins all over the state.
But here the remblance resolved, our heroes, the Grateful Dead, in their original five man ensemble crankin' out tunes for the century, blessed us up good. God bless 'em.
Twas the last time I was in Winterland when you could walk down in front with no troublin' o' th' waters.

An absolutely pristine recording of a brilliant performance of a bank just coming into it's own. As sad as it as that some of the best songs of this show are apparently lost to history, it's really great to be able to hear such detail.

"TURN ON YOUR LOVELIGHT" - Pigpen lets the GRATEFUL DEAD go crazy during this performance. Pigpen tells it like it is and spells it out to the audience what men really want in this version.
Pigpen demonstrates his "conductor" like abilities while performing "Turn On Your Lovelight". Like a cook with spices & ingredients he would mix the GRATEFUL DEAD into a tasty dish that everyone LOVED!
I highly recommend this version of "TURN ON YOUR LOVELIGHT" to all collectors of 1971 GRATEFUL DEAD. Pigpen puts on a very unique performance.
Bill Graham speaks to the crowd at 15:30 minutes into TOYLL to tell them "we are going past the 2 AM thing, if it stops it's not because of us, it's because they've come in and turned off the switch but we'll just keep going until they get here".

This is truly a great little snippet that's surface. I've only known this show to be on a brual aud tape...amazing upfront soundboard...partial set comes in on Rider...Cumberland and Big Boss Man sound really good...a great mix...this sbd has nice historical value...
